Co-regulation for 10-15 year olds

Co-regulation strategies for 10-15-year-olds focus on guiding them to manage their emotions while providing support. At this age, they are developing independence but still benefit from adult guidance. Here are some effective strategies:

  1. Model emotional regulation
  • Show how you handle stress and frustration in healthy ways.
  • Use self-talk like, “I’m feeling overwhelmed, so I’m taking a deep breath.”
  1. Validate their feelings
  • Acknowledge their emotions without judgment: “I see you’re really frustrated. That makes sense.”
  • Avoid dismissing or minimising their feelings.
  1. Teach self-regulation skills
  • Encourage deep breathing (eg. box breathing).
  • Teach grounding techniques (eg 5-4-3-2-1 senses exercise).
  • Introduce journalling or creative outlets.
  1. Encourage problem-solving
  • Ask guiding questions: “What do you think might help right now?”
  • Help them brainstorm solutions rather than providing answers.
  1. Provide a safe space
  • Create an environment where they feel comfortable expressing emotions.
  • Let them know it’s okay to take a break when overwhelmed.
  1. Set clear and predictable boundaries
  • Establish consistent expectations and consequences.
  • Use calm, firm communication rather than reacting emotionally.
  1. Co-regulate through movement
  • Engage in physical activities together (eg walking, stretching, sports).
  • Use activities like dancing or yoga to release tension.
  1. Encourage healthy social connections
  • Support friendships that help with emotional growth.
  • Encourage them to talk to trusted adults or mentors when needed.
