Join our new sensory group in Lincolnshire

We’re excited to tell you about a brilliant 12 week programme that we’re running for children aged between 3 and 5 in Lincoln starting on April 17th called LEAPlets.

We’ll be running weekly, hour long workshops (every Wednesday at 10am) with qualified therapists for you and your child to help them fill any gaps in the development of their sensorimotor skills helping to ensure they are healthy, happy and school ready.

What are sensorimotor skills?

These are the skills we use to take in information about the world through our senses and to develop our body’s movement, or motor response to that information (if we need to jump out of the way of a speeding tricycle that we see headed our way, for instance).

Who’s eligible?

Adopters with children aged between 3 and 5 who have adopted with Lincolnshire or who adopted 3+ years ago and now live in Lincolnshire

What is LEAPlets?

We don’t usually spend much time thinking about development and how a child moves from one stage of development to another – we’re really used to this just happening without anyone really having to give it any thought. Generally, babies move from spending time on their tummy, to rolling and then move onto commando crawling and crawling before they start walking. All of those kind of movements that babies do in the first year of life build a good foundation for fine motor skills – so things like using cutlery, holding a pencil or threading beads. Sometimes this process can be disrupted for all sorts of reasons but the good thing about these systems is that it’s never too late to fill in gaps and you can never do too much to build them.

We’ll spend a lot of time in our LEAPlets workshops thinking about the children’s physical and sensory development because it’s the foundation for all other development. We talk a lot about the three foundation sensorimotor systems; vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile. Don’t be put off by these words, they just describe the process of development that gives a child’s body the best chance of being strong and having good balance/co-ordination as well as making sense of the world around them (eg noise, touch, smell and taste).
