What are sensorimotor skills?
Sensorimotor skills help children take in information through their senses and develop the movement responses that follow, like jumping out of the way of a fast-moving tricycle. Early movements such as tummy time, rolling and crawling lay the groundwork for later fine motor skills like using cutlery or holding a pencil. Sometimes development doesn’t follow the usual path, but the great news is that it’s never too late to strengthen these foundations.

In LEAPlets, we focus on children’s physical and sensory development as the base for all learning. We explore the three key sensorimotor systems: vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile, in simple, approachable ways to support balance, co-ordination and comfort in the world around them. Alongside movement, we also consider emotional development, helping children grow healthy, happy and confident.

If you’re interested in reading more about the foundation sensorimotor system, please email sarah.clarke@lincolnshire.gov.uk, we’ve got lots of information we can give you!
