Adoptive parents can access several forms of funded early years education and support for their 2- and 3-year-old children. Here’s a comprehensive overview:
Funded early education for adopted 2 year olds
Adopted children are entitled to 15 hours per week of free early education or childcare for 38 weeks a year (totalling 570 hours annually), starting from the term after their second birthday. This provision is available regardless of the adoptive family’s income. The funded hours can be used at various Ofsted-registered providers, including nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups, or childminders.
Funded early education for adopted 3 and 4 year olds
All children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours per week of free early education or childcare for 38 weeks a year. This universal offer is available to all families, regardless of income or adoption status.
Early Years Pupil Premium
In addition to the free early education hours, early years providers can claim the Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) for adopted children aged 3 and 4. This funding amounts to £353 per year and is intended to support the child’s development by enhancing the quality of early education.
To access this funding, parents should inform their childcare provider of their child’s adoption status and may need to provide evidence, such as an adoption certificate.
How to apply
For your 2 year old – Contact your local authority or preferred childcare provider to apply. You may need to provide evidence of your child’s adoption status.
For EYPP: Inform your childcare provider of your child’s eligibility. They will handle the application process and may request documentation to confirm eligibility.
